What a Day! Mt. Pleasant Celebrates Local Legend Moses Fleetwood Walker with Nostalgic Baseball Game

A Day to Remember: Honoring Moses Fleetwood Walker

Today, October 7, 2023, Mt. Pleasant, Ohio, was buzzing with excitement and pride as the community gathered to honor a local hero, Moses Fleetwood Walker, on what would have been his 167th birthday. Walker wasn't just any hometown hero; he broke racial barriers by becoming the first African American to play in Major League Baseball back in 1884.

The Vintage Baseball Game: A Nod to the Past

The day was packed with activities that took us back in time, thanks to the Mt. Pleasant Historical Society and the Ohio History Connection. The main event? A vintage baseball game featuring the Ohio Village Muffins and the Somerset Yankees, who played by the quirky rules of 1860s baseball. Think underhand pitching, no gloves, and catching foul balls on a bounce for an out. The game was a hit—literally and figuratively—and took place on a field near Walker's birthplace, adding an extra layer of significance.

Born in 1856 to a family of abolitionists and entrepreneurs, Walker was a trailblazer from the get-go. He excelled academically and athletically at Oberlin College and the University of Michigan before making his mark in baseball. Despite facing racial discrimination and even violence, Walker stood tall, earning respect for his skill and courage. His MLB career was cut short due to racial segregation, but he continued to be a force in various fields, from business to civil rights advocacy, until his death in 1924.

Unveiling the Historical Marker: A Family Affair

Before the first pitch, the crowd was treated to the unveiling of a historical marker at Walker's birthplace. The honor was bestowed by his great-granddaughter, Renee Powell, a professional golfer and World Golf Hall of Famer. Powell later captivated the audience at the Mt. Pleasant Community Center with stories and insights into her great-grandfather's life and legacy.

The event drew hundreds from near and far, capturing the attention of local media. The organizers hope today's celebration will not only honor Walker's contributions but also inspire new generations to break barriers and strive for excellence.

The Legacy of Moses Fleetwood Walker: More Than Just a Game

So, as the sun sets on this memorable day, Mt. Pleasant can proudly say it did justice to a man whose life story deserves to be told and retold. Here's to Moses Fleetwood Walker—a true American hero.
