An investigation has been launched after skeletal remains were discovered on a property on North Ellis Street in Joanna, Laurens County. The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Laurens County Coroner’s Office, Greenville County Coroner’s Office, Foothills Search and Rescue, and SLED, are working collaboratively to identify the decedent.
The remains were found by a property owner, prompting a wide-range search by Foothills Rescue, which revealed scattered skeletal remains across the area. No clothing or personal belongings, such as a wallet, were found near the remains.
Mallory Cameron from the Greenville County Coroner’s Office stated that a forensic anthropologist is currently in custody of the remains. "She's going to work on doing a skeletal workup to try and estimate sex, race, ancestry, and other details," said Cameron. The office will focus on specific skeletal features like the skull, mandible, and pelvis to determine the sex of the decedent.
"After we make a determination of age, sex, and other characteristics, we will compare this information with missing persons reports in the area," said Greenville Co. Chief Deputy Coroner, Mike Ellis. Based on the condition of the bones, Ellis estimates that the remains have been at the location for over a year, possibly much longer.
The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation. As each day passes, the urgency to identify the skeletal remains and bring closure to a family grows.
